ROY CARTER, K.C.

ROY CARTER, K.C. has been practicing since 1980, and at the age of 38 was one of the youngest lawyers in Alberta to receive his Queen’s Counsel designation. Roy’s practice has largely been restricted to business and real estate law.

Clients continue to look to Roy for strategic legal solutions. With arguably one of the best legal teams in his area of practice, Roy and his team have earned a reputation of excellence right across Western Canada. Roy is one of only a few lawyers that is a concurrent member of the Law Society in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Roy is known to think out of the box and create novel solutions for old problems which led to designing the CLHbid.com platform for owners of Agricultural Land in Western Canada.

RONALD J. HORRIGAN

RONALD J. HORRIGAN has been practicing in Grande Prairie since 1980 and has worked in all areas of law, including family, criminal, corporate, wills, estates, as well as real estate. Within his practice at CLHLaw, he has specialized to include corporate, commercial, wills, estates, and real estate, and provides clients with top quality advice in these areas. Ron also has deep roots in the Grande Prairie area his family having emigrated from Scotland to Bezanson in 1929.

BRENT D. CAGE, K.C.

BRENT D. CAGE, K.C. practices primarily corporate and commercial law advising clients on all aspects of business transactions including the purchase and sale of businesses and reorganizations. He has extensive experience advising on corporate agreements of a general nature pertaining to the development and ongoing operation of a business.

Brent grew up in Beaverlodge and has long established roots in the communities of the west county. Prior to joining CLHLaw, Brent practiced law in Calgary for over 10 years in the areas of securities and corporate finance. Brent completed his articles with a top tier national law firm and then went on to practice as an associate with a securities boutique and as a partner with a full service business law firm. Brent has represented both publicly listed companies and small to mid-sized companies providing counsel on such matters as private placements, initial public offerings, securities regulation, corporate governance and general corporate and commercial law.

Brent has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta, a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Calgary and a Juris Doctor from the University of Saskatchewan. He was called to the Alberta Bar in 2003.

SPENCER MERLO

SPENCER MERLO maintains a practice in corporate law and real estate. Throughout his career, he has developed a client centered practice focused on providing high-quality service and timely communication. Spencer enjoys assisting clients with business transactions, business organization and contract drafting. He strives to build relationships with his clients, as in his view, understanding the client and their business is key to excellent legal advice. Spencer also has a particular interest in corporate reorganizations, and has acted for many clients in tax reorganizations, corporate succession planning, employee share plans and similar transactions.

Spencer also practices in commercial and residential real estate. Spencer has acted for numerous buyers and sellers of property. His goal is to answer your questions in simple terms and ensure that you understand the mechanics of the transaction and the documents that you are signing.

Spencer received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Victoria and a law degree from the University of Calgary. Spencer was called to the Bar in 2019. He regularly sits on not-for-profit boards and is currently a board member for the United Way Alberta Northwest. He also enjoys volunteering with the Game Country Archers archery club. Before becoming a lawyer, Spencer was a fishing guide at Wollaston Lake Lodge in Northern Saskatchewan. In his spare time you might find Spencer on the water, in the woods or walking his dogs around town.

Alle Carter

ALLE CARTER’s law practice is predominantly focused on real estate and wills and estates, with a particular interest in assisting farm families plan for the untraveled road that inevitably everyone will go down – succession planning. Growing up in the cab of a combine and now residing on the farm her great-grandfather homesteaded in 1911, Alle understands family dynamics when a farm is involved. Alle strives to make the conversations easier while offering novel solutions to complex issues that emphasize maintaining generational farms while keeping the family intact. Alle’s passion for agriculture is evident in her legal work with CLHbid, selling farms and ranches across Western Canada. Because she is as comfortable sitting on the back of a horse, running a haybine or driving the firm’s Peterbilt across Western Canada as she is sitting behind her desk, in the end, it means Alle can relate to her Agriculture-based clients.

Team

Tracy specializes in corporate/commercial transactions and has been an integral part of the CLHLaw team for over 30 years. She adheres to high professional and moral standards and seeks to provide exceptional service which keeps clients coming back again and again. One of her core values is to treat all clients admirably and equally; she is organized, takes initiative, and her attention to detail is witnessed in the quality of her work. Tracy was born and raised in Sexsmith; in her spare time, she enjoys golf, soccer, skiing and spending time with friends and family.

Melissa was born and raised on a dairy farm in Ontario. She graduated from Laurentian University with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree and received her CGA designation in 2010. Melissa joined the CLHLaw team in 2018 as the controller. Being a mom of three little ones as well as owning two businesses with her husband Scott keeps her busy in her spare time. She enjoys the outdoors and is always up for an adventure.

Janice is a Legal Assistant with over thirty-five years of experience with three law firms and has worked in various areas of law including residential mortgages, family, commercial financing, wills and estates. During her thirteen years with CLHLaw, Janice has assisted Ron Horrigan in his practice and is a dedicated employee taking pride and ownership in her work, with the proven ability to prioritize and excel in time pressured situations. Janice was raised in the Kelowna area and moved to Grande Prairie in 1985. In her free time, Janice enjoys quilting, visiting with family and friends, and spending time with her husband traveling, camping and golfing.

Sadie was born in Murcia, Spain. At the age of 6 her family returned to Calgary, AB for better schooling for her and her 7 siblings. After high school graduation she attended SAIT where she received her Legal Assistant Diploma with honours. She moved up to Grande Prairie, AB shortly thereafter and started working at CLHLaw in February 2012. Practice areas have consisted of residential and commercial real estate, finance, wills, and leases with current focus on CLHBid sales and purchases. When not at work Sadie enjoys spending time with her husband and their 2 young children at their Sexsmith home, playing recreational volleyball or tennis.

Carmen joined CLHLaw in 2013 and assists Mr. Horrigan with transactions for both corporate and commercial, including acquisitions and disposals, restructuring and property finance. Having worked in the service industry for over 20 years she knows the value of hard work and client satisfaction and strives to deliver the best possible results for our clients.

Carmen was born and raised in Campbell River, BC; and after travelling and living abroad for a few years she decided to make her home in Grande Prairie in 2007. Grande Prairie has been a great place to raise a young family and she has made many lasting friendships along the way. In her spare time Carmen enjoys mountain biking, camping and skiing with her family

Dany joined CLHLaw in 2014 and assists Mr. Horrigan in real estate transactions including sales, purchases and refinances. Previously working as a lender at a financial institution has given Dany the expertise and necessary skills to assist clients with their real estate needs.

Born and raised in Bathurst, NB, Dany is fully bilingual with her first language being French. She moved to Grande Prairie in 2000 and enjoys camping, reading and spending time with her husband and daughter.

Jessica was born and raised in the sunny Okanagan, she moved to Grande Prairie in 2014 and joined the team at CLHLaw. She has been exposed to a variety of areas of law with the main focus on corporate and commercial. Jessica is very organized, resourceful and has pride in her work. In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors and being with family and friends.

Nicola came to Canada via Harrogate, North Yorkshire and Dublin, Ireland. She enjoys meeting people and being part of a team that puts clients ahead of all else. Her Management Team Experience in the service industry is highlighted when dealing with client care in a positive way. In her spare time, Nicola enjoys reading, taking her dog on walks and fitness training.

Emily was born and raised in Southern Alberta but has considered Grande Prairie home since 2012. Emily’s primary focus is in the areas of real estate, estate planning and commercial leasing. Emily’s strong work ethic and motivation to deliver first class work translates into high client satisfaction. When not at work, Emily enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

Elke joined the CLH team after transitioning from Calgary, AB in 2022.  She previously worked in the Legal Department for the worlds largest white label ATM company, Cardtronics (formally DC Payments), in Calgary as well as in Melbourne, Australia.  She also spent several years working as a Bridal Consultant in Calgary and Toronto.

In her spare time, she’s been enjoying getting to know Grande Prairie and surrounding areas of North Western Alberta; as well spending with her two pugs, Huey and Louis.  In a perfect world, she’d be travelling to Jamaica every year to visit family; but would settle with anywhere in the Caribbean.

Abby was born in Grande Prairie and raised in Bezanson. She joined the CLHLaw team in April of 2023 and has been helping out in the Corporate area. When she’s not at work, she enjoys playing guitar, volleyball, and hanging out with her family.

Cristina joined the CLHLaw team in November 2023. She assists with real estate and financing transactions. In her spare time, Cristina enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.
